THE
MEDICAL DEPARTMENT
The
Medical Department is responsible for maintaining the
health of the crew, the treatment of sick and injured
ship’s personnel, disease prevention and the promotion
of good health ship-wide. The head of this department
must be an officer of the Colonial Defense Force Medical
Corps (CDFMC). Additionally, the Chief Medical Officer
provides guidance to the Commanding Officer in the areas
of shipwide sanitation, personal hygiene, radiation
health, environmental and industrial health and aeromedical
evacuations.
Smaller
ships of the Battle Group may not have an embarked Medical
Officer in which case Hospital Corps personnel run the
department under the administrative auspices of the
Operations Department. The Medical Department also utilizes
an inpatient ward for the care of surgical patients
and those requiring special nursing care.
One
of the extended responsibilities of the department is
training the crew in first and self aid, heat stress,
and sanitation. Crewmembers can receive their basic
CPR and CPR instructor qualifications through Medical.
The
ships Medical Department is the casualty-receiving unit
for the Mjolnir Battle Group. The main objective is
to maintain a high level of readiness in order to respond
to any attack or emergency. Hospital Corpsmen and healthcare
professionals staff six Battle Dressing Stations throughout
the ship during all GQ drills and whenever the need
arises.
