THE MEDICAL DEPARTMENT

The Medical Department is responsible for maintaining the health of the crew, the treatment of sick and injured ship’s personnel, disease prevention and the promotion of good health ship-wide. The head of this department must be an officer of the Colonial Defense Force Medical Corps (CDFMC). Additionally, the Chief Medical Officer provides guidance to the Commanding Officer in the areas of shipwide sanitation, personal hygiene, radiation health, environmental and industrial health and aeromedical evacuations.

Smaller ships of the Battle Group may not have an embarked Medical Officer in which case Hospital Corps personnel run the department under the administrative auspices of the Operations Department. The Medical Department also utilizes an inpatient ward for the care of surgical patients and those requiring special nursing care.

One of the extended responsibilities of the department is training the crew in first and self aid, heat stress, and sanitation. Crewmembers can receive their basic CPR and CPR instructor qualifications through Medical.

The ships Medical Department is the casualty-receiving unit for the Mjolnir Battle Group. The main objective is to maintain a high level of readiness in order to respond to any attack or emergency.
