Is responsible to the ship’s commanding officer. The Air Boss supervises and directs primary flight-control operations, aircraft-launch-and-recovery equipment (ALRE), fuel systems, aircraft handling on the flight deck and hangar deck, aircraft firefighting, and crash, salvage and rescue operations

Airwing Control & Maintenance Department (AirComm)

The Battlestar Mjolnir's Airwing is the largest single department on the ship. It has more than 600 men and women assigned. The department ensures the safe and efficient launch and recovery of aircraft and is divided into five major divisions. Flight Deck Control is responsible for handling, spotting, and movement of aircraft on the flight and hangar decks.

This Department is supervised by the Deck Officer (Air Boss), who must, at all times, have current and complete status of all aircraft on board. The Deck Officer also has two Assistant Deck Officers (Mini Boss), the Deck Officer and Assistant Deck Officers rotate eight hour shifts to maintain crew readiness and integrity. Along with the Deck Officer, there are Six Flight Deck Control Officers who rotate four hour shifts so that the Battlestar Mjolnir is always in an alert position to scramble our Vipers and Raptors at a moments notice.

The disposition of "Go-Down" Aircraft before or during launch cycle is given. Handling crew supervisors (Directors) are given specifics verbally and via spotting cards. After the launch, remaining aircraft in landing are moved. The basic spotting order for aircraft that have recovered is similar to the launch spotting cards. As an exact landing sequence cannot be determined, the aircraft are spotted in a feasible location as they come aboard.

"Hard Down" Aircraft are usually sent to the hangar deck and are replaced with "up" aircraft from below. Re-spotting of aircraft on the flight/hanger deck is an exercise in cooperation between personnel of Tylium Refueling and rearming crews, squadron maintenance personnel and plane handlers.

  1. Red Division is tasked with the security and movement of aircraft on the flight deck. Included in this is the Crash and Salvage crew who are the flight deck's fire department and rescue team. The Red Division handles, directs, moves aircraft on flight deck. It also operates aircraft handling/servicing equipment and mans the crash/salvage team. Red Division also responds to medical emergencies on the flight deck.
  2. Green Division maintains and operates the four launch catapults and associated machinery, Visual Landing Aids (VLA) and arresting gear.
  3. Blue Division is responsible for the security and movement of aircraft in the ship's four hangar bays.
  4. Yellow Division handles, directs, moves aircraft on the hangar deck. It operates aircraft elevators, hangar bay doors and assigned fire fighting equipment.
  5. Orange Division, "Gas-N-Go," operates the aircraft Tylium Fueling system, providing Tylium Fuel services to air-wing aircraft. Orange Division is responsible for Tylium Fuel storage and transfer equipment, Tylium Fuel purity, and Tylium Fueling of all aircraft.
  6. White Division operates the ship's aircraft control towers, commonly known as "Pri-Fly (Primary Flight Control)," as well as running the department office where the paperwork never seems to end. Pri-fly is manned by the Deck Officer (Air Boss), Assistant Deck Officer (Mini Boss) and assistant subordinates. Here, the "Air Boss" controls the takeoffs, landings, those aircraft in flight near the ship, and the movement of fighters on the flight decks, which itself resembles a well-choreographed ballet.

The members of this command are elite and mechanical; they are able to launch our defense aircraft in extreme conditions. They see the ravages of the injured pilots and are the first to treat them upon their return to this Battlestar. Mjolnir’s AirComm is the ballet of Thor’s Hammer conducting our defensive air movements in a smooth an elegant manor.
